Questions

As I scrutinize these pictures from the Methodist Church, several questions occur to me; I know that Dr. and Mrs. Cantrell and Janie were Methodists and that most of the Williams family attended the Methodist Church, but I seem to recall Thomas Williams attending the Baptist Church.

Also, there are several pictures of Mrs. Ruth Deaton. I know that Mr. Joe was a Presbertarian, but again, I thought that he attended the Baptist Church.

In Clinton, the Deatons attended First Baptist because it had and still has a ministry for the hearing impaired.

Once I joined Plantersville Baptist and was allowed to vote for deacons, I wondered, though I never asked anyone, why several very prominent men were never considered for deacons; I think Roy Partlow and Lefty Sample were among those I wondered about, and I think that Mr. Joe was also one I wondered about. I found how later that some of the men who were very active at Plantersville Baptist were Presbyterians.

Were there couples where one attended the Methodist and the other went to the Baptist Church?

Who is Plantersville were members of the Presbyterian Church?

The Church

This is the way I recall Plantersville United Methodist Church looking in my youth. Does anyone know about what year this picture was taken?

My bedroom at my grandmother's had two windows; if I looked out the front window, I could see the Baptist Church, and out the side, (east) window, I could see the Methodist Church.

Aaron and Frances

I like the message on the blackboard behind Aaron and Frances Helms. In addition to being good Methodists, Aaron and Frances were wonderful neighbors to Aunt Grace, Aunt Johnnie and my mother as well as good friends to me.

The Plantersville Connection originated as a newsletter made possible by the encouragement of Frances's brother Tim Harris, and Aaron is, of course, my cousin. His mother was named after my grandmother and was a frequent visitor to our house, and Doris and I used to go the Helms house, especially to gather from their garden.

The Joel Monroe Towery Family

According to a note at the bottom of this picture, Mr. Towery donated the land for the Methodist Church in 1907.

I assume the church has always been in its current location. My grandparents moved into that house just east of the church ca. 1914.

Cans

Soft drink cans were part of the decorations for Saturday's events. The Lee County Courier had a front page story about the 13th annual day in the park. According to the paper those attending were encouraged to bring two cans. Jack Wuichet and others have collected enough cans to provide over $7,000 for town projects. Earlier this month Jack collected over 3,000 pounds of cans providing $2,300 for the park

Note from George: Carole did a workshop for seniors in Amory a few years ago; Rev. and Mrs. Crawford Ray were in attendance, and we had a nice visit. They had been in Plantersville the week before to celebrate June Coggins's 80th birthday, I think, so that must have been over 10 years ago, but doesn't seem that long. Rev. Ray passed away not too long after our visit. My mother and I were walking in the cemetery, and I noticed a new grave which turned out to be his.

Mrs. Nannie Pearle's Class

This picture taken in 1915 is of Mrs. Nannie Pearle Towery Adams Sunday School class; Joe and Berta have been identified.

Mrs. Adams lived for a while with my Aunt Johnnie, and her daughter was married to Brother Leroy Grissom, who was related my wife.

THS senior class in the late 20s

I don't think I have posted this picture before. This is the senior class of Tupelo High School in the late 1920s; will have to do some rsearch for the exact year. My father, Ezekiel Candler Kelly is on the end at the right of the top row. Notice how out numbered the boys were. Sam Lumkin who went on to become Lt. Governor of Mississippi is one of the boys, I think. Since a number of Plantersville residents attend THS, some of the girls may be from Plantersville.

One of the jewelery stores in Tupleo placed all the senior's on a clock and the name the little hand stopped on won a nice watch; my dad won and I still have the watch.

City Spirit Award Day

Gloria Holland writes: "This is in conjunction with the 13th Annual Volunteer Fire Department's Day in the park. It will be from 10-2, bring a lawn chair and a minimum of 2 aluminum cans for admission. We have been so blessed to have had donated all the food, most of the entertainment, and at last count about 40 items for the silent auction. We also have giveaways and games for all ages, plus displays by police, fire, military, E911, a health screening, and I am tired thinking about all we have to do in the next few days. However, when all is said and done, we will have properly celebrated our award and also raised money for the park and the fire department. I hope we have a HUGE crowd."

This picture was taken in 1959 at Tupelo High School, I think; Carole, who was in school then, can only identify about half of them. I'm fairly certain there is one from Plantersville; can you find her?

Reminders

Lots of activities are taking place in Plantersville in the next few weeks.

This Sunday, Plantersville United Methodist Church will be celebrating its 100 anniversary beginning at 10 a.m. at the church;

also on Sunday, the annual Plantersville Cemetery Memorial will take place at the cemetery at 3 p.m.;

and on Saturday, October 20, City Spirit Day takes place at the Plantersville Town Park; I don't have the time; someone please help me out.

Janice Rushing Benson

The surgery which Jenny Rigby will have on Tuesday is a rare one; however, as noted before, Carole and I have a friend, Janice, who underwent the same surgery this past February and has made a complete recovery.

Janice is a young and even younger looking grandmother who would hit me if I revealed her age; the doctors couldn't explain why the condition which she had had since birth only begin causing problems a year or so ago.

Let us pray that Jenny's surgery will be as successful as was Janice's.

Gloria sent me the Rigby's address and telephone number and Janice and Vickie have spoken.

October

October seems to be slipping away from me. I was in Tupelo/Plantersville for a quick visit with my mother this week; also, managed to see Aaron and Frances Helms; both are doing well.

I need pictures and/or stories for the site. For the last couple of months, the material has been slim. Please e-mail or snail mail me what you have to share.

Senior Party 1960

This party at the Rex Plaza was for one of the seniors of the class of 1960. There are two young ladies from Plantersville pictured as well as one who married a fellow from Plantersville. I'll give you a few days to see how many you can identify before naming those present.

Note: Love those hats; I'm sure most of you recognized Sherry Sumner, first on the left seated at the table amd Barbara Rogers Mask, standing third from the left; I saw Barbara at the homecoming and she's changed very little since 1960, and the young lady seated fourth on the right is Carole Tackett Kelly.

Sandra Monts Honored

At a joint meeting of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs in Tupelo this past Monday, Sandra Temple Monts was honored as one of the outstanding teacher's assistants in the Tupelo Public School District.

Congratulations to Sandra for this honor and for her many years of service in education.

Mrs. Stanley

I found a picture of a Mrs. Robert Stanley who taught music at Plantersville in the 50s. Does anyone know any more about her?

Mary Blanche Posey send the following: "In case no one else has written on the above subject: Mrs. Stanley, the former Miss Linda Bass, was a student at (and I assume a resident of) Plantersville in grades 1-8 (to graduate in '48), after which she transferred to Tupelo High School along with at least four of her classmates. She was in the class with Jack Price who might have more information. Her first year to teach music at Plantersville was 1949-50. Whether she taught longer should be revealed in later yearbooks."
