Fred Horton

Fred graduated in 1950 or 51, didn't he; this is his senior picture. Fred lived next door to Carole's aunt and uncle at one time.

First Grade

June Harris's first grade picture - my own memory of that 1946-47 year with Miss Dixie is very fuzzy.

Plantersville Businessman Honored by Health Magazine

The title of this entry was the headline in yesterday's Jackson paper which stated that Ray Shoemaker, who is the CEO of Rural Healthcare based in Plantersville, was honored as an innovative leader in the field of health care.

Where in Plantersville is this company located?

Carole serves on a board with Ray but is unaware of his Plantersville connections.

The mayor writes that the company is "located in the old service station on Highway 6 next to where Mr. Mitchell's store and the post office were located at one time."

Plantersville Baptist Ministers

During her illness in 1995, Aunt Johnnie gave me this list of pastors of Plantersville Baptist. Later she expanded the list but I have managed to lose that one. I added Brother Danny, though I am not certain of his last name.
Please make corrections and additions to this list.

Charles Nelson
Henry West
Smalley (she wasn't sure of his full name)
Henry West (his second tenure)
J. P. Cavin
Stanley Rogers
Frederick Brooks
McFatridge (don't have his first name)
J. T. Thompson
Charles Tyler
Silas Johnson
Brother Lindsey (don't know his first name)
David Hall
Ron Berch ( is that the correct last name?}
Rick Spenser
Jimmy Smith
Sam Hamilton
Brother Danny

Cathy Garrett: "Corrections on your list of pastors: Brooks Lindsey, Ron Burch, Rick Spencer, and McFatridge’s given names were Forrest Vernon, not sure which one he used."

Another Ice Storm

June and Bill, Jr., weather the ice storm of 1951. Wasn't this the one that left us all stranded for weeks? As I remember it, our lights were back on before some folks because we were on the same circuit as Luther Harris, and Jerry Bishop, Burns' father, and Luther's son-in-law, worked for Tombigbee.

Playing in the Dirt

Burns Bishop playing in the dirt behind his grandmother's house, I think. Picture taken ca. 1947.

Visiting with Price and Ann

I attended the services at Alta Woods Baptist last night and heard Price sing and Step Martin preach. Price, despite battling a stomach bug, was wonderful. If he appears anywhere close to you, go hear him. His schedule is on his Web site: http://dcw.net/phea/

Unfortunately, my bride was unable to attend; she wanted to go, but I was afraid they would evacuate the church she sounded so hoarse.

Ruff Family

June Harris sent this picture of her great-grandparents (Joe and Sally Armstrong Ruff), who are also Burma's. June could identify some, and Burma sent the following: "Back Row: Jack Ruff, John Watt Ruff, Mamie Ruff (Rogers), Mary Bucy's mother, Lillian Ruff (Rogers) Barbara Jo's grandmother, Front Row: Dave Ruff(my grandad), In great grandaddy Ruff's lap is Joe Graves Ruff (Helen's grandad), in Sally Ruff's lap is Maggie Ruff(Harris) June's grandmother, Gussie Ruff (Grant) Eugenia Polk's grandmother; Hattie Ruff is not in this picture. I don't believe she had been born at this time since she was the youngest of all."

Plantersville Featured in Daily Journal Next Week

"I just wanted to pass on that I got a call from Bobby Pepper from the Daily Journal on Wednesday. He said that he had decided he wanted to feature Plantersville in the next edition of the Lee County Neighbors section of the paper and that it should come out next Wednesday, March 7th. I have no idea how it will turn out or what it will say, but we tried to include a little history, pictures of recent events and a lot of positive things that are happening in the community."

From Gloria Holland, Mayor of Plantersville.
