Leaning on a car

Help me identify this well dressed young man laaning on a car.

Lynette Brown: "That would be Mitch Massey(Dr. Massey). The Mitchell's grandson(Son of Fred and Corrine Mitchell Massey). He attended first grade at Plantersville then
moved to Tupelo."

Thanks to Cathy and Lynette for confirming what I guessed that this is Mitch Massey. It has been a long time since I last saw Mitch.

These Three Men

I think I know who these three men are, but rather than guess someone confirm their identities. I don't know the young people in the picture.

Cathy Garrett: "It's Ed Parker, Johnny Parker, Gene Monts on the bench, Charlotte
and Pat Grant playing checkers, and Janet Parker peeping over her father's
shoulder."

While I would not have known any of the children, I thought that was Mr. Ed and Gene Monts, and I recognized Johnny Parker from the several pictures already posted of him. However, I prefer not to guess. Cathy send a lighter picture which I will post; meanwhile if you click on the picture it should be larger and easier to view.

Boys in a Tree

Several months ago, I posted a picture of three girls in what appears to be this same tree. Can anyone name these two boys?

Harold Towery Family

This is the Harold Towery family; someone help with the names.

Thanks Cecil

Jimmy expresses his thanks to Cecil.

Jimmy Willcutt

I am fairly certain that this is Jimmy Willcutt while he was playing baseball at Mississippi State. He also played freshman basketball there, and he and another player used to attend our Sunday School class which was taught, I think, by Jimmy's aunt. Wasn't Jimmy's mother, John Lester Gunter's sister?

The last I knew about Jimmy, he was on the staff at Mississippi State. Does anyone know where he is now?

See the next post for what Jimmy wrote on the back of this picture.

Girl on Horse Back

How lucky all the children growing up in Plantersville were to have Cecil and his park. I wonder if any other town in the U.S.A. the size of Planersville offered so many activities for its children.

Taking a Break

These young folks are taking a break from all the activities at Cecil's.

The boys from right to left are Woody Sample, Davey Harris and one of the Williams boys. I think I recognize several of the girls, but would be guessing.

Champ 1975

Someone will have to explain what this was all about. I believe the sign reads, "Champ-1975" and the girl in front who may or may not be Cathy is holding what appears to be candle sticks.

Amy Bostick: "If I'm not mistaken that is a shuffleboard tournament and the gold items are trophies for the winner."

Hut Hut Hike

Can you recognize any of these boys and girls playind football at Cecil's?

The Grant Family

There is a picture of the Grant family celebrating Niecy's birthday which was posted on October 27, 2006.

Spectators

What year and why were the baseball games moved from the field next to the railroad to in front of the gym?

The man in the foreground wearing a hat and leaning on the post is, I think, my stepfather, Raymon Stovall, which means I was probably there, but back then I was camera shy. Everyone looks familiar, but I can't identify anyone else.

The Johnson Family

Brother Silas Johnson and Mrs. Johnson with Betsy, Paul and Cathy in a picture taken at the gym at Planterville High School apparently after one of Paul's baseball games.

David Halberstam

Carole and I knew David Halberstam, the author, who as you may have heard was killed in a car accident yesterday in California. David's first journalism job was working for the late Henry Harris at the West Point newspaper; some years later, Carole's first journalism job was working for Henry Harris at the Starkville newspaper. David and Carole enjoyed sharing Henry Harris stories.

The last time I saw David, which was several years ago, his daughter was teaching school somewhere in the Delta.

The obituary in the "New York Times" today mentioned his first job in West Point and stated that his only daughter now lives in Manhattan. I don't know how long she taught in Mississippi.

Miss Nollie

Mrs. Nola Berryman is the subject of the April 4th "Lee County Neighbors" blog on the "Journal" site. http://leecountyneighbors.wordpress.com/ I understand that picture of Mrs. Nola was in the paper.

I visited with J. B. at Mike's funeral last Thursday.

Looking At Pictures

These young folks appear to be looking at one of Cecil's albums. Please help identify them.

Gloria Holland responds: "The picture of kids looking at a "Cecil album" are, left to right front row-Cindy Partlow, Jerianne Monts, Gloria Temple, Marilyn Sample, back row, Gary Gunter, Rodney Rogers, and Paul Johnson."

Thanks Amy

I have now had time to view all the pictures on the disc that Amy Bostick sent; there are over one hundred and fifty wonderful pictures, most taken at Cecil's. I think Tommy Monts and his dad took most of them. Amy shared ten or twelve of these pictures before.

In most of the pictures, I can only guess at the identities so will need your help including names.

Tommy Monts and Lisa

Who is this with Tommy?

Amy writes: "The girl in the picture with Uncle Tommy is his daughter Lisa."

Cecil's Park

I need help identifying the people in this picture from Cecil's park.

Charlotte Diggs and Amy Bostick confirm that the lady in the background is Niecy Grant and think the man is J. T. Borden.

Cecil and His Kids

Need help identifying these young folks with Cecil.

Larry Coggin and ?

Amy Bostick sent me over a hundred pictures taken over the years at Cecil's; I will be posting them (she had sent some of these before, but most are new), over the next few weeks.

In this picture, Larry Coggin is on the left, and I should know the young man on the right but am drawing a blank.

Feeding Time

My mother and her friends traveled a lot; I found this picture of one of their trips to Florida, I think, in her album. I think the lady in the picture is Price's mother, Mrs. Gilly Harris.

Is this correct Price and did I spell your mother's name right?

1962-63

This school picture was taken in the 1962-63 school year. Can someone tell us who this young man is?

Today

Carole and I went to the visitation for Mike Collier last night, and I attended the funeral this afternoon. A number of his relatives from Plantersville and Lee County were there including Steve Monts.

I've missed seeing Mike on a regular basis since his illness and will miss him greatly in the days to come.

Mrs. Grey held up well; she's a special lady, but we need to keep her and her family in our thoughts and prayers.

The guest book for Mike is still online at lakewoodfuneralhomes.com

I found this picture in an album with Westmoreland written on the back; can someone identify who this is?

Town of Plantersville Web Site

Gloria Holland, the mayor, send the following:

"CDF is putting up a web page for the Town of Plantersville. It's not up yet, but hopefully will be in May. In addition to that, I have a lady in town that is helping me with a newsletter, and details are being worked out so that we can attach the newsletter to the web page."

When the web page becomes active, I will add a link.

Mike Collier

I just learned that my good friend, Mike Collier, lost his battle with cancer about four this morning. Sympathy to Kay and Wes and Barry and their families as well as Mrs. Grey and Mike's siblings.

Visitation will be at Lakewood Funeral Home, just outside Clinton, from six to nine Wednesday night with the services there at two on Thursday.

Since February of 2006, Mike has been through a lot.

E-Mail

Several of you have reported difficulty contacting me by e-mail. Due to Comcast taking over Time Warner in this area, I had no choice but to change my e-mail address. The new address is gkelly100@comcast.net.

Reunion

We have set a date of Saturday, July 28, for a reunion this summer. Place and time and other details to follow.

All comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Youth Choir

Carole served as news editor on three different newspapers and always insisted on names in the cutline. Unfortunately, the names are not included with this picture. Please help identify these young singers, as well as what year this picture was taken.

The House on the Corner

A poet wrote that "in dreams begin responsibilities." As I age, dreams merge with reality so that I don't always trust my memory; nonetheless, one of my vivid memories concerns that house that was south of the Baptist Church, and though on the same side as Earl Kelly's, I believe it belonged to the Repults who lived across the highway. In the early 40s, I was playing in our front yard and observed a lady lean across the end of the porch to say something to her grandchild when she fell off the porch with either a heart attack or a stroke.

Does anyone remember what family lived in that house and when the house was torn down?

Names

I may be confusing my names. There were a couple of young men a little older than I was who lived in the house behind the school. One of them had an accident with a shotgun when I was six or seven. Their name may have been Winchester. Can someone provide light for my foggy memory?

Waycaster or Winchester

There were a couple of young men close to my age who lived near Mr. Bucy. One of them, I think, pitched for Cecil's baseball team and broke his wrist throwing a curve. Their last name was either Waycaster or Winchester, if I remember correctly. Can someone help me out?

Tommy Monts reports that the young man who broke his wrist (Tommy was there and heard the break) was Wayne Brown who had a brother Gene and a half brother, Horace Hall.

Tommy reports that the Winchesters lived in that house on the corner.

Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery

Price Harris reminded me about this site : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eunitycem/unity.html

David Webb, Kitty Morgan's grandson, worked hard on this site and provides lots of information.

I will provide a link to this site on this blog, if I can discern how that is done.

Cedar Grove

Carole and I celebrated our 41st anniversary by staying at the Cedar Grove Mansion in Vicksburg. Cedar Grove was built about 1840 overlooking the Mississippi River. There is still a cannon ball in the wall from the shelling during the siege of Vicksburg as well as a hole in the floor where one passed through.

Thanks to our children's generosity, we stayed in a suite which had been the music room. If you are ever in Vicksburg, it is worth a visit. Tours are from ten to four each day.

Plantersville Wedding

Forty one years ago tonight, Carole and I were married in my grandmother's house in Plantersville in a ceremony performed by Brother Silas Johnson. Can't believe it has been forty one years; the time has flown by.

I woke on that Saturday morning and drove to Tupelo to buy a suit at J. C. Penny's, stopping first on Gloster for breakfast, at the Red Roof Inn, I think, and saw Charles Collier there. I haven't seen Charles since April 2, 1966.

Ben Kelly

Sympathy to the family of Ben Kelly. Ben was a distant cousin, and I grew up playing with him and Steve.

There's a picture of a very young Ben with Steve and Tommy Monts posted on this site this past October.
