Questions

As I scrutinize these pictures from the Methodist Church, several questions occur to me; I know that Dr. and Mrs. Cantrell and Janie were Methodists and that most of the Williams family attended the Methodist Church, but I seem to recall Thomas Williams attending the Baptist Church.

Also, there are several pictures of Mrs. Ruth Deaton. I know that Mr. Joe was a Presbertarian, but again, I thought that he attended the Baptist Church.

In Clinton, the Deatons attended First Baptist because it had and still has a ministry for the hearing impaired.

Once I joined Plantersville Baptist and was allowed to vote for deacons, I wondered, though I never asked anyone, why several very prominent men were never considered for deacons; I think Roy Partlow and Lefty Sample were among those I wondered about, and I think that Mr. Joe was also one I wondered about. I found how later that some of the men who were very active at Plantersville Baptist were Presbyterians.

Were there couples where one attended the Methodist and the other went to the Baptist Church?

Who is Plantersville were members of the Presbyterian Church?

Cheerful Young Faces

Can't identify any of these bright and cheerful young folks.

Concentration

This young man seems to be in deep concentration.

Group Shot

I think I recognize Junior McWhorter, Marlin Morgan, Boyce McFarling, Buddy Partlow, and Mrs. Ruth Deaton. Help me with the others, most of whom I should know.

Enough

Okay, enough of this posing.

Young Methodist Pose for the Camera

These young church goers pose for the camera.

Choir

Dennis Bailey is on the back row; who are the others in the choir? Judging from Dennis's age, I'd guess this beautiful music was being made in the late 50s or early 60s.

Methodist Minister

Was this one of the minister of Plantersville Methodist?

This picture is from a celebration at the Methodist Church a few years ago.

Don't those cup cakes look good; are they decorated for Halloween? Who is the lady?

Sorry Janie, I should have known you; blame it on being away too long plus these tired old eyes.

Playing the Organ

Not to completely slight the Baptist Church; here is a picture of Cathy Johnson playing the organ at Plantersville Baptist in 1986. I lifted this picture from Cathy's web site.

The Church

This is the way I recall Plantersville United Methodist Church looking in my youth. Does anyone know about what year this picture was taken?

My bedroom at my grandmother's had two windows; if I looked out the front window, I could see the Baptist Church, and out the side, (east) window, I could see the Methodist Church.

Miss America

I wonder which of these elegant and graceful beauties went on to the Miss America Pageant? Let's embarrass some folks by identifying these beauties.

Make a Joyful Noise

Now, this is indeed a choir; Charlotte believes the post a couple of days ago was not one. Help me identify these young singers.

I thought I'd post Charlotte's comments here so you can match names with faces:st: Linda Towery, Sandy Hughes, Sherrilyn Helms, Sandy McGaughy, Sharon Monts, Charlotte Diggs, Ellen Williams
2nd:Pam Bailey, Jan Bailey, Carole McFarling, Georgia McWhorter, Jean Jutman, Celia Williams, Ellen Rooker, Iva Ruth Parker
3rd: Boyd Williams, Stanley Williams, Jim Borden, Freddy Grant, Phillip Williams

Remember that with most computres, clicking on the picture should make it larger.

Sunday School Class?

Was this Miss Katherine Rogers' Sunday School Class? I think I recognize Sandy and Freddy.

Another Youth Choir

With my tired old eyes, it is difficult to recognize any of these young folks; is that Freddy Grant in the rear?

Aaron and Frances

I like the message on the blackboard behind Aaron and Frances Helms. In addition to being good Methodists, Aaron and Frances were wonderful neighbors to Aunt Grace, Aunt Johnnie and my mother as well as good friends to me.

The Plantersville Connection originated as a newsletter made possible by the encouragement of Frances's brother Tim Harris, and Aaron is, of course, my cousin. His mother was named after my grandmother and was a frequent visitor to our house, and Doris and I used to go the Helms house, especially to gather from their garden.

The Joel Monroe Towery Family

According to a note at the bottom of this picture, Mr. Towery donated the land for the Methodist Church in 1907.

I assume the church has always been in its current location. My grandparents moved into that house just east of the church ca. 1914.

Cans

Soft drink cans were part of the decorations for Saturday's events. The Lee County Courier had a front page story about the 13th annual day in the park. According to the paper those attending were encouraged to bring two cans. Jack Wuichet and others have collected enough cans to provide over $7,000 for town projects. Earlier this month Jack collected over 3,000 pounds of cans providing $2,300 for the park

City Spirit Day

Charlotte Diggs sent pictures taken during City Spirit Day this past Saturday; however, the blog is temporarily refusing to upload pictures; they say they are working on the problem so check back soon.

Pictures

Many thanks to Amy Bostick for sending these wonderful pictures, and remember that if you click on the pictures they should increase in size for easier viewing.

I still have a number of pictures that I will post over the coming days, stay tuned.

Ladies

I recognize Mrs. Ollie Pruitt on the back row, and think I could identify some of the other ladies, but am not certain, so please help.

Minister

I don't know the minister but should know the two ladies; however, I am having a senior moment.

Of course, Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Cantrell were both very close friends of my grandmother and visited our house often.

Mother and Son

Please identify these two.

Note from George: Carole did a workshop for seniors in Amory a few years ago; Rev. and Mrs. Crawford Ray were in attendance, and we had a nice visit. They had been in Plantersville the week before to celebrate June Coggins's 80th birthday, I think, so that must have been over 10 years ago, but doesn't seem that long. Rev. Ray passed away not too long after our visit. My mother and I were walking in the cemetery, and I noticed a new grave which turned out to be his.

About when would this picture of Mrs. Ray and her son have been taken.

100 Anniversary?

Is this a picture of some of the folks at the celebration at the church on the 14th?

Mrs. Nannie Pearle's Class

This picture taken in 1915 is of Mrs. Nannie Pearle Towery Adams Sunday School class; Joe and Berta have been identified.

Mrs. Adams lived for a while with my Aunt Johnnie, and her daughter was married to Brother Leroy Grissom, who was related my wife.

Showing a Film

The young people at the Methodist church prepare to veiw a film, it appears. Again, I am not certain enough to identify anyone.
