Johnson House

I sent a copy of this picture to Cathy Johnson Garret, and here is her reply:

"The brick house (Mother’s house) was built in 1968 by the Estes men – David, Harris, Morgan, and a few others. They donated most of the labor, so my parents only had to finance a small 10 yr. mortgage, mostly for the material. The old parsonage where I grew up was built around 1940 by Charlie Bucy, so whoever was pastor then was its first occupant. It was occupied by the Johnsons from May 1952 until winter of 1965-66(?). The last pastor’s family to live there were the Lindseys. First pastor to occupy the new parsonage next to the church was David Hall."

Charles "Butch" Sample

Butch was in Mississippi attending the Ole Miss and Wake Forest football game and visiting his brother, Woody, in Jackson. We met Sunday night for dinner and had a nice visit. I think the last time we had seen each other was in November of 1974. Butch is retired, playing golf and keeping fit. He looked as if he might weigh less than he did when we were in college. His mother still lives alone but is frail.

Old Baptist Parsonage

The old parsonage for the Plantersville Baptist Church located across from Cecil's house. Was Brother Johnson the last pastor to live in this house, and who was the first pastor to occupy this house.

Mitchell's store

Wasn't the Mitchell store called Plantersville Cash and Carry? The gin was located behind it humming into the night during the fall.

Family Reunion

This picture of a Morris family reunion was taken on Earl Kelly's yard; you can see what I think is the Price/Coggin house in the background. My grandfather, John Kelly, my grandmother, Aunt Grace, Aunt Willena; my father, Uncle Will Morris and the gentlemen at the head of the table, Robert Nabors, a Civil War veteran, are the ones I have identified. Robert Nabors' son was Dr. Sam Nabors from Evergreen, whose daughter Willena married my Uncle Morris, and one of Robert's daughters, Edna, married Uncle Will, my grandmother's brother.

Ronald and Idlett Daniel West

Idlett Daniel taught at Plantersville school for several years and boarded with my Aunt Grace. She has retired from teaching and lives with her husband in Ashland.

Joey Bouchillon

Aunt Johnnie always told me how talented Joey is, but I was never around him much. Last summer, I attended my son-in-law's uncle's funeral, and my son-in-law's first cousin from Amory is a good friend of Joey's. He said Joey can fix anything.

Also, the Craig Reese in the picture is the grandson of my first cousin, Carl Kingsley.

Group

This picture was taken at Estes in Plantersville a few years ago when June Harris was visiting.

From left: George and Carole Kelly; Hoyle and Albie Edwards; Larry and Betty Coggin; Leon and Jean Willis; Bill and Annie Martin; Willie and Burma Schumpert and June Harris

Correction: Estes was closed; this picture was taken at a restaurant on Highway 6 in Tupelo near the Trace.

Web Site

When posting Mary Blanche Posey Arnold's comments, the blog site went berserk and posted it four or five times; I deleted all but one on both the browsers I use; however, Mary Blanche reports her browser still shows more than one entry. I apologize but don't know any solution.

Please e-mail me any news or comments you have and send pictures if possible.

I will be making a trip to Plantersville this week and hope to contact some folks about acquiring pictures to post.

Per Request

Someone requested a picture of yours truly as a teenager. Finding one was more difficult than I thought; until I find a better one, this picture is from our tenth grade annual.

Mary Blanche Posey

Mary Blanche Posey sent the following information:
Although you probably have answers to some/all of the questions you have asked in the past few months, I am answering the ones I know.

MAY: re girls' basketball team - the last person is Puddy Eason, girls' coach.

re "Who Is She" - Sylvia Johnson, music teacher. She was from Brewer/Shannon
and left our school around '47 or '48.

JULY:
10th Grade Class 1950 - The "other girl" is Mrs. Wiley Johnson, history teacher, also class sponsor. Her husband taught math at Plantersville. Sitting between her and Margaret Ann Harris is Jimmy Hussey. I think (not sure)Leon Davis is the last on the first row. First on back row is W. D. Whitehead and fourth is Fred Stanford. Last on back row is Jessie Davis.

Commercial Club - 1950 - 1st row: June Johnson, Martha Kate Ellis, Barbara Ann Morgan, Sue Whitehead, Shirley Borden, Mary Blanche Posey, Guilene Kelly, June Johnson, Willow Dean Lyons. 2nd row: Helon Hopper (teacher), Fred Horton, Jessie Davis, Grady
McCaskill, Glen Harris, Jr., Elmo Lyons, Carl Allred, Lawrence Weeks, Reed Presley, J. B. Berryman, Tom Westmoreland, Thomas Williams, Louis Collier, Gerald McCaskill, James Russell.

Note: Thanks to Mary Blanche Posey Arnold for her help.

Additional note from Mary Blanche: Re Girls Basketball Team, May report. On the back row standing, third from the end, is Yvonne Raper. Also, the coach's name could be spelled Puddie rather than Puddy Eason.

Uncle Fielden and Aunt Johnnie

This picture of Thomas Fielden and Johnnie Mae Kelly Harris was taken in 1945, and Aunt Johnnie, ever the comic, has written on the back, Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr.

Birthday Party

I published this picture in the newsletter several years ago. The picture was taken on the west side of my grandmother's house on my fourth or fifth birthday. I think that is Winnie second from left standing; I am first from left sitting, with Eleanor Ann Partlow next to me and the baby is Joe Deaton, Jr. I think. The boys sitting on the right look as if they could be twins, but I don't remember any twins that age.

Joseph Kelly Family

Bridget Mannix came to America ca. 1850 and met and married Joseph Kelly with whom she had attended school in Ireland. They settled near where the Tombigbee State Park is now.

On the back row from the left: George, Steve, F.F. and Mollie; front row: Will, Joseph and Bridget.

Will, I think I am correct, served two terms as sheriff of Lee County.

Note: Someone sent me a copy of Will Kelly's obituary dated Feb. 27, 1952; he served as sheriff of Lee County from 1904-1908 and from 1932-1936; his son, Roman, was the long time clerk for the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Note: Joseph Kelly and my g-grandfather Michael Marion Kelly were brothers who lived next to one another. They had a sister and another brother, neither of whom had children.

Labor Day

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Labor Day. I have had a cold, poor me, which settled in my sinuses and haven't felt like doing much for over a week. I'll try to post some new material, but would be grateful if some of you would send me pictures and stories about Plantersville. I'm running out of material.
