American Express

I have no clue who these people are or where this picture was taken although I would assume it is close to the Frisco Railroad somewhere. Notice the American Express sign, the middle word obscured by the driver's head.

I mentioned in a previous post about Aunt Johnnie recalling the first time she saw an automobile. She saw it from the steps of the Baptist church.

My friend Jerry Carr may be able to identify this automobile's make and year. If you have any information, please share with us.

Plantersville Scene

Looking east from my grandparent's yard. That's Monts and Mitchell stores, Mr. Charlie Monts' house and part of Mr. Joe Partlow's house in the picture, I think.

I have no clue who the young people are or what year this picture was taken. Obviously, Mr. Roy's store had not yet been built. Does anyone know what years Mr. Monts and Mr. Mitchell opened their stores?

Happy Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day, I'm posting this picture of Uncle Ernest George Kelly who served in WWI; on the left is Mary Alice Morris, our cousin who lived in the Carolina community and on the right is, I'm fairly certain, a very young Aunt Johnnie. She was probably 14 or 15,

Cast of Sleeping Beauty

This picture was on the same page as the rhythm band one. Again, I recognize faces but would prefer help in placing names with them.

Rhythm Band

The rhythm band at Plantersville school in the 50s. Lots of familiar faces but will need help identfying them. Beating two sticks together constituted my musical career and I probably did that without rhythm. Do schools still have rhythm bands?

Anna Stovall Morgan

Mrs. Anna was Raymon's sister; she was born in 1894 and died in 1960 and was married to Hillard Morgan who died in 1976.

Plantersville Country Club

Gloria Holland wrote: "We are excited to announcing the opening of "The Plantersville Country Club" formerly Estes Fish and Steak House, today at 5:00 p.m. The hours/days of operation are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. -11:00 p.m. Our foster son, Haiwei Zhou is the new proprietor and he brings with him years of experience in this industry. He has hired back many of the veterans from Estes and we are expecting great things from this business. Please come by whether you live locally or when you visit our community."

Borden Lake Tree

During one of the storms last week, lightening struck one of the trees in Borden's Lake setting it on fire.

Harold Hall

I am again struck by how young Harold was when he died. Linda Stovall Booth reported that Jo Nell has been experiencing some health problems recently, and for that matter, Linda, is also undergoing some health issues. Please add both to your prayer lists as well as Jimmy Ellis.

Back five or six years ago when I was picking up mother's medicine, Robert Hall, who is a pharmacist, assisted me.

Mrs. Lou Ella Ellis

Mrs. Lou Ella was Raymon's sister and for those of you who don't know she and Mr. Bill and their children lived on a hill across from Mr. Bennie Estes about four miles east of Plantersville and Raymon lived on the hill just south of them. When my mother married Raymon in 1948, the twins, and John and Jimmy were still at home; I'm a little cloudy on whether "Boo" was still there or not.
Raymon farmed and drove the school bus; however, a year after he and mother married, he took a job with the Pure Oil Company in Tupelo located where the new development near city hall is now.

I talked with my step-cousin, Linda Stovall Booth, last week and she reported that Jimmy has recently undergone heart by-pass surgery. I hope he is recovering well.

Mrs. Mary Patton Price

The Price family was another family very close to my family. Mrs. Price and her family lived next door to my grandparents, in the house that June and Doris and Larry Coggin lived in, and Alieen was married to Raymon's brother, Martin.

I am in contact with Jack and Janie and hope they will correct any errors in the obituary of their mother or in my post.

Raymon Stovall

Despite the spelling in the obit, I'm fairly certain that Raymon spelled his name without the d. Ironically, Carole's grandfather, Raymon Tackett, also omitted the d.

I hadn't read this obit in some time and am struck by how young Raymon was when he became ill. He would have been only 56 or 57.

Raymon was not able to attend Carole and my wedding on April 2, 1966 and died on June 2, 1966 exactly two months later.

C. L. Deaton

Going through some stuff this morning, I found the copy of Raymon Stovall's funeral book that my mother kept. Underneath the book were several obituaries. I wanted to share some of them with those of you who might not have copies.

Does anyone remember what year C. L. Deaton died? If my memory is correct, he mowed his yard and went inside and lay down on the couch and had a heart attack.

Mrs. Dixie died and Mr. Joe moved to Clinton in 1975 I think so his death would have to be later than that date.

The Deatons were no relation to us, but were like family. After Mrs. Dixie's husband died, she and the boys lived with my grandparents for a time. Mr. Joe and my father became best friends. I still have a bracelet made from a shell that Mr. Joe sent me from Italy during World War II.

Mrs, Sarah Louise Parker

My copy of the Lee County Courier arrives by mail four or five days late. I received the May 8th paper yesterday and noticed an obituary I missed in the Journal.

Sympathy of John and Joan Edwards on the death of his sister, Mrs. Sarah Louise Parker. Brother Paul Sims helped conduct the service.

Mrs. Helen's Funeral

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Partlow are Friday at 3 p.m. at the Holland-Harris Funeral Home in Tupelo. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as it has been a tough year. Linda underwent her major surgery not long ago, and Mrs. Aleene's funeral was only three weeks ago.

Condolences may be emailed to holland-harrisfuneralhome@comcast.net.

Jimmy Woods

The only shot I can find of Jimmy head on and even here, he's partly hidden behind Buddy Palmer; on the left is Jimmy Metcalf.

Larry and Jo

Larry Coggin and Jo Brooks Cobb at the reunion; I think that is yours truly and Jean Kelly Willis in the background on the right.

Larry reported that his Dad, Mr. June Coggin, is in a retirement home and doing well.

Carole took this picture with a camera borrowed from her sister.

Bob, George and "Moose"

Pictured at the reunion at the Tupelo Country Club are from the left: Bob Jackson, I think, some old guy and David 'Moose" Wallace.

In the summer of 1965, Moose, Sally Feemster and I commuted to Ole Miss. That summer probably doesn't mean much to Moose and Sally, but it was during that time, that Carole and I had our first date.

THS class of 1958

You will probably need to double click to recognize anyone in this picture; can you pick out Larry, Winnie, Burma, Jean, Jimmy Woods and George?

I'll be glad to identify those that I can upon request.

Helen Partlow

I have received word from Gloria that Mrs. Helen Partlow died earlier today. Our sympathy goes out to Linda and Cindy.

Up high, down low, too slow

Paul "Tip" Sims teaching my granddaughter how to play "up high, down low, too slow;" Paul was interim pastor at First Baptist in Plantersville a few years ago and is now the pastor at First Baptist in Nettleton. He preached at Plantrsville during the recent revival.

Tip is married to Carole's first cousin, Laney, and he performed my daughter's wedding in 1999, September 11, of all dates.
