Fred Westmoreland

A couple of the most recent postings included pictures of Fred Westmoreland. I wasn’t close to Fred until my sophomore year when because of the small enrollment, many of my classmates and I took roles in the senior play, and after practice Fred often drove us to the Hilltop Cafe, I think that was the name, in Tupelo.

During spring break of 1957, I was still in bed when Lou Ella Ellis came by and I heard her tell my mother about Fred’s tragic death. I remember not wanting to get out of bed. That was probably the first time I had been directly touched by tragedy.
